Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word describing the life-energy
which is in and around us all... rei, meaning
"universe" and ki (Qi, or Chi in Chinese), meaning "life force". Using very light touch, often no touch, Reiki is transfered from practitioner
to client to enhance the body's natural ability to heal
itself through the balancing of its own inate intelligence. Reiki utilizes
specific techniques for restoring and balancing the natural life-force energy within the body. It is a holistic,
natural, hands-on energy healing system that touches
on all levels: body, mind, and spirit.
Because it is so powerfully healing, I give Reiki in every session, regardless of the modalities being practiced. My clients often experience intense heat...sometimes colors, shapes, images, and answers as well. It is very nurturing, clearing, comforting, and healing.
The significance of the word Usui.
Life's origin is of a Spirit-like, ethereal nature and certainly wasn't created by man, however like many ancient healing arts and technologies, it can be accessed by man.
Prior to the turn of the century atop Mt. Kurama, Japan, attempting to discover a miracle capable of healing the many ill orphaned children he'd been charged with caring for, Christian monk Dr. Mikao Usui secluded himself for long periods of solitary meditation in an effort to access a solution for those children. In that time and space of deep "at-onement" he was divinely blessed and inspired with the awareness that a human being, acting as a conduit, could channel universal love, light, and healing ie: reiki, into another human being, and using the right combinations of hand positions and intention, could impact glands, organs, and body systems, as well as energy centers (chakras) and emotional body. Hence, Dr. Usui began teaching (initiating) those around him. Among those was Chujiro Hayashi, who later taught Hawayo Takata who brought this amazing healing art to the West via California in the 1930's. Takata then named it Usui Shiki Ryoho which she taught for 45 years until her death in 1980.
The initiation process itself is more like a passing-on of tradition, much like the tradition associated with Native American story-telling...handed down, face-to-face, generation-to-generation. There is a very specific form that was taught by Dr Usui, and both Hayashi and Takata were committed to holding-sacred that form in their teachings.
I am 3rd generation Reiki in the lineage from Takata, who initiated John David Gray, who initiated my reiki Master Chris Rosenthal. I am committed to upholding the Usui tradition and do honor and practice those same traditions regarding hand positioning, intention, awareness, etc, as was first inspired by spirit through Dr. Usui more than 125 years ago. |
